Společnost přátel starožitností (SPS), založená již roku 1888, náleží mezi nejstarší české spolky, zaměřené na poznávání a ochranu národního kulturního dědictví. U zrodu společnosti s velkoryse a jasně formulovaným programem stáli jak významní profesionálové, tak nadšení amatéři a spojení všech zájemců o historickou problematiku se až po současnost stalo charakteristickým rysem členské základny společnosti, která dnes čítá téměř 600 členů individuálních (specialisty mnoha historických disciplin i řadové členy z řad amaterů) a 60 kolektivních (muzea, archivy apod.) nejen z České republiky. Společnost se vždy snažila rozvíjet mnohostranně orientované historické bádání, regionální historii a historickou vlastivědu, aktivně se angažovala v péči o historické památky a podílela se na tvorbě památkové legislativy. Od roku 1893 vydává Společnost svůj Časopis, který je dnes ve svém 105. ročníku. V poslední době se výrazně rozvíjí ediční činnost. Společnost již vydala čtyři specializované sborníky (věnované významných osobám společenských a především historických věd), pravidelně vydává brožury vlastivědné knihovničky (věnované významným architektonickým i archeologickým památkám) a podílí se na vydávání mnoha sborníků a monografií (např. Castellologica bohemica). Pro své členy Společnost jednou měsíčně pořádá přednášky, pokračuje v tradičních exkurzích a pravidelně zásobuje své členy veškerou literaturou věnovanou společenským vědám s výraznou slevou. Nejen dlouholetá tradice, ale především bohulibá, pestrá a zajímavá skladba současného spolkového života přilákala do našich řad množství uznávaných členů, kteří dali Společnosti punc nejprestižnější organizace tohoto druhu v naší zemi v celé šíři spektra jejího působení.

Founded in 1888, the Czech Society of Antiquaries is one of the oldest associations in the country oriented towards the understanding and protection of the cultural heritage. Among those founding the society, with its clear, liberal programme, were both well-known professionals and enthusiastic amateurs in related fields; this coming together of all those interested in historical problems has remained characteristic of the society's membership. Today, the Society has around 700 individual members (specialists in many historical disciplines as well as grassroots amateurs) and 60 collective members (museums, archives etc.), from both within and without the Czech Republic. The Society has always tried to promote multifaceted historical research, regional history and local historical studies, has actively engaged in monuments protection, and has contributed to the development of new monuments legislation.
Since 1893 the Society has issued its own periodical, now in its 108th year. In the recent past, editorial activity has increased - the Society has now issued four specialised volumes (dedicated to important figures in the social, and particularly historical, sciences), regularly publishes brochures for the local history bookshelves (dedicated to important architectural or archaeological monuments), and contributes to the publication of many journals and monographs (e.g. Castellologica bohemica).
The Society organises monthly meetings for members, continues in its traditional excursions, and regularly supplies members with a range of literature dedicated to the social sciences at significant discounts.
It is not only the Society's long tradition, but primarily its bright, positive and dynamic approach that has drawn many esteemed figures to its ranks, and it is they who make the Society one of the most prestigious organisations of this type in the country in all of the areas in which it is active.
Die bereits im Jahre 1888 gegrűndete Gesellschaft der Antiquitätenfreunde gehőrt zu den ältesten tschechischen Vereinigungen, die sicht auf die Erkenntnis und den Schutz des nationalen Kulturvermächtnisses orientieren. An der Wiege dieser Gesellschaft mit ihrem klar formulierten Programm standen sowohl professionelle Fechleute wie auch begeisterte Amateure und die Verbundenheit aller Interessenten fűr die historische Problematik bis zur Gegenwart ist zu einem charakteristischen Zug ihrer Mitgliedsbasis geworden. Heute zählt die Gesellschaft nahezu 600 individuelle Mitglieder (Spezialisten vieler historischer Disziplinen und Amateure) und 60 Kollektivmitglieder (Museen, Archive uähnl.) nicht nur aus der Tschechischen Republik. Die Gesellschaft bemühte sich stets um die Entfaltung einer vielseitig orientierten historischen Forschung, regionalen Geschichte und historischen Heimatkunde, engagierte sich aktiv in der Pflege der historischen Denkmäler und beteiligte sich an der Bildung der entsprechenden Legislative. Seit dem Jahre 1893 verlegt die Gesellschaft ihre Zeitschrift, die heute ihren 105. Jahrgang erlebt. In letzter Zeit entfaltet die Gesellschaft eine markante Editionstätigkeit. Es erschienen bereits vier spezialisierte Sammelbände, (die bedeutenden Persőnlichkeiten der gesellschaftlichen und vor allem historischen Wissenschaften gewidmet waren), regelmässig erscheinen Broschűren fűr die haimatkundliche Bibliothek (die bedeutenden architektonischen oder archäologischen Denkmälern gewidmet sind) und beteiligt sich an der Herausgabe vieler Sammelbände und Monographien (z.B. Castellologica Bohemica). Fűr ihre Mitglieder veranstaltet die Gesellschaft einmal monatlich Vorträge; setzt die traditionellen Exkursionen fort und versorgt regelmässig ihre Mitglieder mit sämtlicher Literatur, die den gesellschaftlichen Wissenschaften gewidmet ist und dies mit markanter Ermässigung. Nicht nur die langjährige Tradition, sondern vor allem die erfreuliche, bunte und interessante Komposition des derzeitigen Vereinslebens fűhrte in unsere Reihen zahlreiche anerkannte Persőnlichkeiten, die der Geselschaft das Siegel der hőchsten Prestige in unserem Lande im ganzen Spektrum ihrer Wirksamkeit verliehen.
